PayPal Restructures Product Organization

Cuts 325 employees toward creating 'agile' development teams.

PayPal announced Monday that it will lay off 325 full-time employees and 120 contractors in a restructuring of its product organization.

The announcement confirms recent reports that PayPal would cut as many as 400 from its workforce of 13,000 to simplify development efforts, which the company had already begun refocusing around mobile payments.

In a post on the PayPal Blog, PayPal President David Marcus explains that nine product groups will be “collapsed” into one, with “agile teams of designers, engineers and product managers.

“Instead of being organized around projects, our teams will now be dedicated to products and focused on our customers—consumers, developers, small businesses and large retailers,” Marcus says.

The changes, he adds, will allow PayPal to more quickly develop “great products and experiences that make [customers’] lives simpler.”

PayPal’s workforce reductions will come primarily in existing product and technology organizations, according to the blog post.
