Thompson Named CEO of ShopRunner

Former PayPal, Yahoo exec joins retail shipping network.

ShopRunner, a service that integrates shipping services across a network of retailers, today named Scott Thompson, former president of PayPal, as its new CEO.

According to ShopRunner, Thompson is expected to be its “long-term CEO,” replacing co-founder Mike Golden, who will become the company’s president.

“Joining ShopRunner is a tremendous opportunity to build on the strong foundation that the company has already established,” Thompson says. “While PayPal and ShopRunner are fundamentally different businesses, there are similarities in each of their success. Both companies are focused on building the broadest network of satisfied merchants by providing the value that creates a large and loyal customer community, creating a virtuous circle.”

ShopRunner is a former eBay subsidiary, and eBay still owns an interest in the company. Thompson became a member of ShopRunner’s board of directors while at PayPal.

ShopRunner provides free two-day shipping from retailers in its network, and recently announced plans to expand its offerings to include an express checkout service and a local pick-up option. Leaders of the 22-month-old company point to Thompson’s experience leading PayPal—which more than doubled in revenue during his tenure—as a key factor for his appointment.

“Scott’s deep understanding of online businesses, combined with his team building, operational capabilities and focus on product, will allow ShopRunner to realize its ultimate potential,” says Michael Rubin, CEO of Kynetic, a ShopRunner majority shareholder.

Thompson most recently was CEO of Yahoo, but was forced to resign after false information on his resume was exposed. Prior to Yahoo, Thompson spent several years at PayPal, and was the company’s president from 2008 until his surprise move to Yahoo in January.
