Shopify Predicts Big Sales Increase

Retailers could see combined GMV nearly double.

Buyers are embracing merchants on Shopify, an e-commerce cart that provides storefront templates, mobile, marketing and SEO tools, and more to small sellers who want to open their own online stores.

In fact, consumers are embracing—and opening their wallets to—these retailers so much that one official has big hopes about how high sales figures could reach by the end of the year.

Mark Hayes, who does marketing and public relations for Shopify, tells Internet Retailer the site is growing rapidly, adding about 1,000 stores every month. He predicts that 10,000 new Shopify stores will debut by the end of the year, and says Shopify merchants could nearly double their combined gross merchandise volume at the end of the year.

Hayes adds that Shopify storeowners could make a combined total of $500 million in gross merchandise volume this year. That’s $225 million more than they made last year, when combined sales reached $275 million.

Shopify debuted in 2006. It had a reported 25,000 online stores built on its software at the beginning of this year, including 4,000 shops from sellers in Europe.
