Coming Soon: Shop on Your TV

PayPal partners with Comcast, TiVo to enable 't-commerce.'

Starting this fall, cable subscribers with PayPal accounts will be able to buy items they see on TV with a click of their remote control.

PayPal has teamed with TiVo and Comcast to allow consumers to buy products featured in interactive commercials and make donations while watching TV, using either their remote or a tablet device, says Scott Dunlap, vice president of emerging opportunities for PayPal.

The move to TV commerce—which some are calling “t-commerce”—could prove to be very profitable. According to market researcher Nielsen Company, U.S. shoppers watch an average of more than 34 hours of television a week. PayPal estimates that 49 percent of cable subscribers would be open to making purchases using their TVs. PayPal also notes that about 30 percent of those who would shop with their remotes would use PayPal to make purchases on the tube.

“The online and offline worlds have merged and commerce now happens anytime and everywhere,” Dunlap writes on the PayPal Blog. “We believe the TV is the next natural outlet for commerce, and we’re excited to bring the innovation and security of PayPal’s payment solutions to this new frontier. And we’re in good company; eBay Mobile has also recently entered the t-commerce space with the Watch with eBay iPad app that launched in March.”
