Amazon Has Reasons to Smile

Retailer tops customer ratings, reports best holiday season.

The logo for Amazon.com has a smiley face, and this holiday season, the retailer had plenty to smile about.

It was voted the top online store in customer satisfaction for the eighth year in a row and it had its biggest selling season ever.

The ForeSee annual Holiday E-Retail Satisfaction Index, reports Amazon came in No. 1 in customer satisfaction in a survey of more than 24,000 shoppers from Thanksgiving through Christmas. Amazon had a score of 88—the highest mark of the survey’s history.

“We are grateful to customers for once again ranking us at the top … and for choosing to shop at Amazon this holiday,” says Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com.

How many shoppers chose Amazon, exactly? Millions. In fact, the marketplace reports its 2012 holiday season was its busiest, with 26.5 million items ordered around the world on its busiest day, Nov. 26, the Monday after Thanksgiving and this year’s Cyber Monday. On that day, shoppers ordered a “record-breaking” 306 items every second across product categories.

Popular items on Amazon included the “Fifty Shades of Grey” book series, “The Dark Knight Rises,” Angry Birds items and lamps similar to the leg lap that appeared in the movie “A Christmas Story,” the retailer reports.

“If you stacked every ‘Christmas Story’ Leg Lamp purchased by Amazon customers this holiday season, the height would reach the top of Mount Everest,” the company notes.
