Selling on Etsy Proves Gainful in September

Marketplace says number of items sold up 72.6%, year over year.

Merchants selling on Etsy sold more items on the marketplace this September than they did a year ago, and they made significantly more.

Sellers sold 72.6 percent more items this year compared to September 2011. Overall, merchants selling on Etsy made $76.8 million during the month—a slight increase compared to August’s total of $76.2 million—but a 69-percent increase compared to the same time last year, says Sinohe Terrero, who works for the site’s business operations department.

Sellers posted more than 2.53 million items on the site during the month, a 2.9-percent increase compared to August, he says, adding that more than 866,000 new Etsy members joined the site during that month.

Several merchants selling on Etsy were happy to hear about the increase, reporting they saw a jump in sales, themselves. Steph of OneStitchDesigns, for instance, says her sales grew by 60 percent compared to September 2011.

Sellers congratulated each other below Terrero’s post and say they hope the months to come will also be on an upswing.

“May the trends continue,” writes Tami Lopes of Tami Lopes Designs.

Overall retail sales grew 0.4 percent in September compared to August, and 2.1 percent, year over year, according to the National Retail Federation.
