eBay sellers are asking a good chunk of change for discontinued Surge soda, and some buyers seem willing to pay.
Surge, produced by the Coca-Cola Co., was discontinued in 2003 following a drop in sales. It was only in production for six years, according to Wikipedia. However, the citrus-flavored drink is now making a splash on eBay.
A search for “Surge soda” on the marketplace today produced multiple listings, one going for $250. That listing was for an unopened bottle of the drink and had three offers from buyers as of press time. A listing for an unopened empty can of the soft drink was also for sale for $25. A large Surge soda bottle had a starting bid of $40.
Rebecca Miller, an eBay seller of more than 12 years, says she isn’t surprised that sellers are offering the discontinued drink at such high prices. In 2010, several sellers were listing o.b. tampons at huge markups when they were discontinued and became hard to find in local markets.
“Prices went nuts on eBay, and people bought,” she adds. “People like what they like, and they’ll pay to get it.”
