eBay Tests Same-Day Delivery with eBay Now

Invitation-only app available in San Francisco.

eBay is testing same-day delivery with a new app called eBay Now that’s currently available by invitation only.

The app allows buyers in San Francisco to purchase products from retailers eBay is partnering with like Macy’s, Target and Best Buy, to get their items delivered the same day. Buyers can download the app for their iPhones, iPads or iPod touches, according to an email eBay sent out to users about the app.

In that email, the company encourages shoppers to try the eBay Now app, and invite friends and family to use it, too.

Deliveries can take as little as an hour, and are available Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays, according to news reports. Deliveries cost $5, and are available for purchases of more than $25. However, testers get $15 off their first order and pay no shipping on their first three orders.

Rebecca Miller, an eBay seller of more than 13 years, says the new app isn’t likely to make independent eBay sellers happy.

“It seems eBay is trying to help big retailers and forgetting about the little guys,” she says.

Shoppers can sign up for the app. However, people who don’t live in San Francisco and sign up for the app will get a message saying the service is only available in that city and that eBay will them know when that changes.

Ebay is getting completely out of line. They know that only a big retailer could do this. And what’s up with this $5 shipping. That’s impossible. Everyone knows that to ship even the smallest item in one day, the charge from UPS, FEDEX, USPS would charge anywhere from $20 to hundreds of dollars. This program will fail and along with it ebay will lose a lot of good sellers.

I’m sure we’ll be seeing a future eBay Seller Update that will require this same day delivery option in our listings in order to maintain Top Rated Seller status and receive the 20% discount. ebayzon doesn’t want to mess with the small independent sellers, so they continue to develop policies that drive them out of their marketplace.

Yes, eBay is forgetting the little guys. There’s also the upcoming increase of store subscriptions, from $24.99 to $49.99. I have just started selling months ago and still on the 100-item limit (of what I can sell per month). This increase isn’t making me happy at all. I’ll have to close my less than 2-month old store in a few weeks.
