Royal Mail to Paint Great Britain Gold

Olympic, Paralympic wins to be celebrated with golden mailboxes.

Royal Mail won’t paint its mailboxes their traditional red during the Olympic and the Paralympic Games.

Instead, the mail carrier will celebrate every win Great Britain has in the two events by painting its mailboxes gold, Royal Mail announced on Tuesday. It notes that “a dedicated team will be on standby” to paint the mailboxes within days of a win.

The painted boxes are expected to be located in the winners’ hometowns, whenever possible, for single-person events. For events involving two people, the golden mailboxes will be in each of the winners’ hometowns, Royal Mail adds. For team events of more than two people, the mail carrier will choose a mailbox in a “location relevant to all team members” to paint gold.

People will be able to use the golden mailboxes just like they can the red ones, and painting the boxes will not delay shipments, officials report. They add that “in due time,” the golden mailboxes will be repainted their traditional red, a color that has been used for them since 1874.

The Olympics kick off in London on Friday with the opening ceremonies. The Paralympics start Aug. 29.
