eBay Buys Remaining Stake in BillSAFE

Company will pair invoice service with PayPal.
eBay Acquires BillSAFE

While shoppers were busy crossing off the last people on their holiday shopping lists, eBay was busy finalizing the acquisition of a German purchase-on-invoice service.

On Dec. 22, the marketplace announced it had acquired the remaining shares of BillSAFE, a purchase-on-invoice service in which eBay bought a minority stake in October of 2010. eBay notes it will combine BillSAFE with PayPal to give Germany’s more than 15 million PayPal accounts “a simple and secure way” to buy on invoice.

According to eBay, purchase by invoice is very popular among shoppers in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands. In Germany, nearly 20 percent of payments were billed via invoice. With this purchase method, shoppers buy an item, get the product then receive an invoice for the item after it has arrived and the buyer has had time to inspect the product.

This type of buying will help both buyers and sellers alike, notes Alexander Ey, managing director of BillSAFE.

“Security-conscious shoppers can receive and inspect the merchandise they bought online before paying for their purchases. And merchants can sell to customers who were previously skeptical of buying online. It’s an ideal match,” he adds.

According to Arnulf Keese, managing director of PayPal Germany, German shoppers are very security conscious and enjoy the convenience and safety of invoicing when buying online.

“One of PayPal’s greatest assets is the security of our system, and we’re glad that we can now offer customers even more peace of mind with a payment method that they already know and prefer and that drives more sales for the merchants,” Keese notes.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
