PayPal Woos Buyers on and off eBay

New mobile app, expanded buyer protection introduced in time for holidays.

As the holidays approach, PayPal is making its services easier to use with the introduction of two new features.

The first is a new iPhone app that will allow users to deposit checks right into their PayPal accounts. According to news reports, users simply have to photograph the fronts and backs of their checks, including the endorsement, to deposit checks into their PayPal accounts. While this is not a new idea—banks such as Chase and Bank of America have similar apps—it will make it easier to add funds to any PayPal account, company officials say.

The second new feature is meant to make shopping easier and more convenient: added buyer protection.

According to reports, PayPal will begin covering items that are damaged en route to their final destinations and those that reach shoppers’ doorsteps in significantly different condition than what was described by the seller. PayPal has offered buyer protection since October of 2003; however, this protection was only for items that did not arrive and for unauthorized transactions.

“PayPal is committed to giving customers a safer online experience through privacy, prevention and protection,” says Katherine Hutchinson, PayPal’s senior director for global risk management. “When you use PayPal this holiday season and beyond, you can have peace of mind knowing that we’re offering even more protection if something goes wrong.”
